The Eagle — a working philosophy

Rise abovethe noise.

Seven principles. Not a poster. A working philosophy I keep having to reread.

i

Discipline

Do what needs doing, especially on the days you do not feel like it. Motivation is weather. Discipline is climate. One of them you can plan around.

01
ii

Focus

Know what deserves your attention and what does not. Most failure is not caused by doing the wrong thing. It is caused by doing nine things, all of them reasonably well.

02
iii

Consistency

Small actions repeated long enough become extraordinary results. There is nothing exciting about that sentence, which is precisely why most people will not do it and why it keeps working for the ones who do.

03
iv

Faith

Believe in what you are building before anyone else can see it. Every real thing spends a stretch of time existing only inside the head of the person building it, and that stretch is lonelier than anyone tells you.

04
v

Patience

Meaningful things take time. The internet has made it very easy to mistake visibility for progress, and speed for value, and a busy week for a good one.

05
vi

Hustle

Move. Learn. Adapt. Keep going. Direction beats speed, but neither does much standing still.

06
vii

Freedom

Build a life where your time, your choices and your work belong to you. That is the point of the other six.

07

Why the eagle

Perspective.

Looking up the clean edge of a white concrete building into open sky

It rises above the noise, sees further than the thing directly in front of it, and moves deliberately rather than in a panic. Most bad decisions I have made were made at ground level, quickly, with something urgent shouting in my ear.

That is the mindset I try to carry into business, technology, leadership and life. Try being the operative word.

Eagle Lessons

Every Eagle Lesson is a reminder that growth is built out of repeated choices.

Not motivation for a day. A philosophy for the long game.

Think better. Build better. Lead better.
